Last checked: October 2026. Winter hours on Skye change at short notice, especially for weather, staffing and the Christmas break. Anything marked check before you go couldn't be confirmed from an official source when we updated this page.
Most people asking "what's open on Skye in winter?" have the same worry: will I drive all that way and find everything shut? The honest answer is no, although you can't do everything. From mid-October to Easter, Skye's big paid attractions mostly close. The castles go quiet, the croft museum locks up, and plenty of seasonal cafés and restaurants take a break or cut their days.
The good news is that the things that make Skye special don't close. The Storr, the Quiraing, the Fairy Pools and Neist Point are there all year, and usually much emptier. Both of the island's main whisky distilleries keep welcoming visitors, and enough pubs and restaurants stay open that you won't go hungry, as long as you plan ahead. Rabbie's Skye and Eilean Donan Castle small-group day trip from Inverness in the calendar above had departures on most November and December dates when we checked.

With the castles closed, a guided day is one of the easier ways to see the Isle of Skye in winter. Tours from Inverness and Edinburgh usually combine Portree, the Old Man of Storr and the Fairy Pools with Eilean Donan Castle, Loch Ness and Glencoe on the way. Browse live options below.
Attractions and Castles
Dunvegan Castle & Gardens is the one people search for most, and the answer is no: it isn't open in winter. The castle and gardens open daily from 1 April to 15 October, 10am–5.30pm (last entry 5pm). The seal boat trips run only from 1 April to 30 September. The castle says its shops are open year-round, but in practice that seems to mean the online e-shop, so don't count on a gift shop on site. You can still drive out to look at the castle from the road and walk around Dunvegan village. The toilets in the castle car park only open in season. We've also seen reports that Dunvegan's November fireworks display isn't running for the time being. Check before you go if that's why you're visiting.
Skye Museum of Island Life at Kilmuir, the thatched crofting township near the top of Trotternish, opens from Easter to mid-October. Its official hours are Monday to Friday, 10:30am–4:30pm. Easter Sunday 2027 falls on 28 March, so expect it to reopen around then.
Armadale Castle, Gardens & Museum of the Isles in Sleat opens late March to the end of October, and the 2026 season started on Friday 27 March, open 9.30am–5pm. Some older listings mention weekend winter opening for the gardens, but we couldn't confirm that for 2026–27, so treat it as closed unless the estate says otherwise. Armadale Estate Ltd bought the estate in January 2026, and the Clan Donald Lands Trust has said the museum will stay open throughout 2026 at least before it eventually moves. Check before you go for the 2027 season and any winter shop or accommodation opening.
The old Aros Centre in Portree isn't the Aros some guidebooks describe. The Isle of Skye Candle Company bought it in March 2022 and turned it into a visitor centre with a shop, pizzeria and cinema-theatre now called Las. We couldn't confirm winter hours or film nights for 2026–27, so check before you go. On a wet evening a film is still a good option if one is showing.
We couldn't confirm winter hours for the Skye Serpentarium (Broadford) or the Colbost Croft Museum either. Both have traditionally been seasonal. Check before you go.
Outdoor Sights (Always Open)
There's no gate on the Old Man of Storr, the Quiraing, Kilt Rock, the Fairy Pools, Neist Point, the Fairy Glen or Coral Beach. Winter only changes the practicalities:
- The Storr. The pay car park is staffed and has toilets, which the site says are free to use. You pay at the machine (cash or card) or with the Ringo app. The official site, thestorr.com, lists £6 for up to 6 hours and £8 for up to 12 hours, after Highland Council's £1 rise in April 2026.
- Fairy Pools. The community-run car park, run by the Outdoor Access Trust for Scotland, charges £8 per car and £10 for motorhomes. It has around 177 spaces, off-grid toilets and a vehicle length limit of 8 metres. We couldn't confirm whether it's staffed and the toilets open on every winter day, so check before you go. Either way, don't park on the single-track Glenbrittle road.
- The Quiraing and Neist Point. Both are exposed and can be lethal in strong winds and ice. The Quiraing road over from Staffin to Uig is no fun in snow. Our self-drive guide to Scotland covers single-track driving before you go.
- Daylight. Portree gets only about 6 hours 42 minutes of daylight on the shortest day, 21 December 2026, according to sunrise-sunset.org: sunrise is around 09:05 and sunset around 15:40. Start walks early and carry a head torch.
Public toilets are the weak spot in winter. Several council and community blocks cut their hours or close, so use the facilities at distilleries, cafés and pay car parks when you have the chance.
Distilleries and Breweries
Talisker (Carbost) is the most dependable winter attraction on Skye. Its official winter hours are November to February, Monday to Sunday 10:00–16:30, with the bar's last orders at 16:00. Hours go back to 10:00–17:00 in March. It's closed on 25–26 December and 1–2 January. You may see a "silent season" from 9 to 24 November on other websites. That looks like an old date: Talisker's own site gives its 2026 annual maintenance as 11 October to 1 November 2026 inclusive, with the shop staying open seven days a week. In winter the distillery may close at short notice for weather, so check its Google listing on the day. Tours are booked on the distillery's own site; GetYourGuide doesn't sell them.
Torabhaig (Teangue, Sleat) says on its own website that it opens seven days a week from April to October and five days a week from November to March. It doesn't say which five days, so check before you go. Torabhaig has also closed for occasional single days in past winters for staff training, so book a tour. Its tours don't accept children aged 12 and under.
Isle of Raasay Distillery hasn't published its 2026–27 winter hours yet. Last winter, according to the distillery's website, the shop, bar and restaurant opened four days a week (closed Monday to Wednesday) in November and December 2025. They closed completely in January 2026 and reopened on 5 February, with tours at 11:00, 13:45, 15:45 and 17:00. Expect a similar winter pattern and check before you go. You'll need the Sconser–Raasay ferry, which runs a winter timetable from 19 October 2026 to 25 March 2027. In winter the late Saturday sailing has to be pre-booked with CalMac.
Isle of Skye Distillers (Misty Isle shop, Portree) publishes summer hours only. You can't visit the distillery itself. Check before you go for winter hours at the shop. The same applies to the Isle of Skye Brewing Company shop at Uig.
Restaurants, Pubs and Cafés
Winter dining on Skye has one golden rule: book, even midweek. Fewer places are open, kitchens close earlier, and the ones that stay open fill up.
Portree
- Antlers Bar & Grill (The Portree Hotel): the hotel says it's open all year, with lunch and dinner daily.
- Caberfeidh: pizzas and burgers on Somerled Square. Check winter days.
- Dulse & Brose, Scorrybreac, Cafe Arriba, The Isles Inn, Sea Breezes: winter hours not confirmed for 2026–27. Check before you go. Some are seasonal, and several Portree restaurants close on a Monday or Tuesday in winter.
North and Trotternish
- The Ferry Inn, Uig: its last dinner service of the 2026 season was listed as Saturday 24 October. Check before you go for any winter bar opening.
- Expect very little open around Staffin and Kilmuir. Take snacks and a flask.
West: Dunvegan, Waternish and Edinbane
- The Three Chimneys, Colbost: open every day apart from its annual closure from mid-December to mid-January. Book well ahead.
- Edinbane Inn: winter hours run from 5 October 2026 to 3 January 2027. Dinner is served daily 4pm–8pm and lunch 12pm–2pm at weekends, and the inn is closed from 4 January to 28 February.
- Edinbane Lodge: dinner Monday to Friday from 6pm, plus a festive dinner-and-room package from 17 to 30 December.
- Greshornish House: no dinner from 1 November to 28 February.
- Stein Inn, Loch Bay: winter status not confirmed. Check before you go.
Carbost and Minginish
- The Old Inn, Carbost: open fires, and traditional music on Thursdays when open. It closed for part of last winter and reopened on 1 March 2026, so check its 2026/27 winter dates.
- The Three Chimneys at Talisker: lunch only in winter, 12:00–15:00. We've seen reports that it closes on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Check before you go.
- The Oyster Shed: reportedly open all year apart from Sundays. Check before you go.
- Sligachan Hotel and Seumas' Bar: the hotel's own website is selling Christmas and New Year 2026 packages, so it looks set to open over the festive period. That contradicts booking sites that list some facilities as closed from 1 November to 28 February. Check before you go.
Broadford and Sleat
- Torabhaig café: follows the distillery's reduced winter days.
- Hotel Eilean Iarmain: restaurant open seven days and an open fire in the Am Pràban bar; booking sites list a closure 23–26 December.
- Kinloch Lodge, Creelers, Cafe Sia: winter status not confirmed for 2026–27. Check before you go.
Shops, Crafts and Rainy-Day Options
Skyeskyns in Waternish is the standout. Its showroom and tannery are open seven days a week, 10am–4.30pm, and its Portree shop opens Tuesday to Saturday. A visit to Talisker plus Skyeskyns makes a good wet-day loop on the west side. Add the Isle of Skye Candle Company's Portree visitor centre if the weather really sets in.
Practical Services
- Supermarkets: Portree and Broadford have the island's main supermarkets (Co-op). Stock up there, because village shops cut their hours in winter. Check opening hours, especially on Sundays and around Christmas.
- Fuel: fill up in Portree or Broadford. Smaller pumps keep shorter hours. Don't head into Trotternish or Duirinish on a low tank.
- VisitScotland iCentre, Portree: we couldn't confirm winter 2026–27 hours. Check before you go.
- Campsites: most close for winter. Don't arrive in a campervan without a confirmed pitch.
- Car hire: there's very little on the island itself. Most visitors hire in Inverness.
Transport: Ferries and Buses
- Mallaig–Armadale (CalMac): winter timetable from 19 October 2026 to 25 March 2027, with fewer sailings than in summer and limited weekend service. Book ahead and check CalMac's service status page on the day.
- Uig–Tarbert and Uig–Lochmaddy: winter timetables cover the same dates. Check which one applies to your dates.
- Sconser–Raasay: turn-up-and-go, winter timetable from 19 October 2026.
- Citylink coaches: Citylink says that in winter there are up to three services a day from Portree to Glasgow. Check the 917 Inverness–Portree times for your dates.
- Stagecoach local buses: Sunday and evening services are very thin in winter. Check before you go.
The summer ferry timetable is planned to start on 26 March 2027, just before Easter. If you're travelling at Easter, that's also when many attractions reopen.
Not driving? Tours that run in winter
Rabbie's Skye and Eilean Donan Castle day trip from Inverness and the Isle of Skye sightseeing highlights minibus tour from Portree both showed dates through November and December when we checked, as did the multi-day trips below. Our Isle of Skye tours guide compares every starting point.
Minibuses capped at 16, down Loch Ness and over the Skye Bridge, back in Inverness around 20:00. In winter that means the last few hours are in the dark, but someone else is driving them.
Check availability
A small-minibus run around the island's best-known stops with a local guide, starting in Portree. Useful in winter when Stagecoach buses are thin.
Check availability
Glenfinnan, Glencoe, Loch Ness and Trotternish across three days with a Hairy Coo driver-guide. You book two nights in Inverness yourself.
Check availabilityWinter Events
- SEALL Festival of Small Halls 2026: live music in village halls across Skye, Raasay and Lochalsh. It opens at Dunvegan Community Hall on Thursday 19 November 2026, then visits Kyle (20 November), Raasay (21 November matinee), Braes (21 November), Ardvasar (24 November) and Edinbane (25 November).
- Skye Santa Dash: Portree, Saturday 5 December 2026 (check registration details with Skye Events).
- Race Dunvegan 10K & 5K: Saturday 20 March 2027, at Dunvegan Castle.
Christmas and Hogmanay events hadn't been announced when we checked.
Where to Base Yourself in Winter
Portree is the easy choice in winter. It has the most restaurants still open, the main supermarket, fuel, and short drives to the Storr and Trotternish. The Portree Hotel advertises winter rooms with breakfast from £75 a night.
Broadford suits you if you're arriving over the bridge or via Armadale, or want Torabhaig and Sleat. It has a supermarket and fuel, but fewer evening options.
Self-catering is often the most relaxed choice in winter, because you aren't relying on a restaurant being open.
Tips for Dealing with Winter Closures
- Phone ahead. Google hours on Skye are often wrong in winter.
- Book tables. Even for Tuesday nights.
- Watch the weather. Distilleries, ferries and roads can all shut at short notice.
- Plan around the Christmas gap. Many places close between 24 December and 2 January.
- Carry food and a flask. Trotternish especially has long gaps with nothing open.
- Pack properly. Our November packing list covers the essentials.
For a ready-made plan that works around the closures, try the 2–3 day November plan. And if you're hoping for the aurora, our northern lights section lists the best north-facing spots and the alerts to install.
What's Open on Skye in Winter: FAQ
Is Dunvegan Castle open in winter?
No. It opens from 1 April to 15 October. You can see it from outside, but the castle, gardens and seal trips are closed.
Are restaurants open on Skye in winter?
Yes, but fewer of them, with shorter hours. Portree has the most choice. The Three Chimneys and the Edinbane Inn (until 3 January) are good options outside town. Book ahead.
Is Talisker Distillery open in winter?
Yes. It's open daily 10:00–16:30 from November to February, closed 25–26 December and 1–2 January, and may close for weather.
Is the Fairy Pools car park open in winter?
The car park and the walk are open all year. We couldn't confirm whether it's staffed and the toilets open every winter day.
Are the Skye ferries running in winter?
Yes. CalMac runs winter timetables from 19 October 2026 to 25 March 2027 on Mallaig–Armadale, Uig and Raasay, with fewer sailings and more chance of weather cancellations.
Is the Old Man of Storr open in winter?
Yes. It's an open hillside with a pay car park and toilets. Ice and wind are the real risk.
The Bottom Line
Winter on Skye means trading castles and croft museums for empty viewpoints, warm distillery bars and pubs with the fire lit. Base yourself in Portree, book your dinners, and check every "check before you go" item the week you travel. The island is very much open; it just works to a winter timetable.
