Last checked: October 2026. Winter opening days change at short notice. Check each place the week before you travel.
Three days is enough to see the best of Skye in winter, as long as you plan it around the light instead of a list of sights. In mid-December the sun is up in Portree for about six hours forty minutes. On 15 December 2026, for example, it rises at 09:00 and sets at 15:40. Most failed winter trips to Skye are planning failures: a two-hour drive at the start of the day, a long lunch in the middle, and the best viewpoint reached in the dark.
If you'd rather not drive single-track roads in the dark, Rabbie's Isle of Skye 3-Day Tour with Accommodation in the calendar above covers much of the same ground from Edinburgh, with two nights in Portree B&Bs included. The plan below gives each day one region, puts the big outdoor stops first and leaves distilleries, shops and dinner for after dark. It assumes you're staying in Portree and have a car. Further down there are versions for no car, for two days, and for Christmas and New Year.
If you haven't decided whether winter suits you, start with Isle of Skye in November: is it worth it? For which attractions, distilleries and restaurants open this season, see what's open on the Isle of Skye in winter.
The Itinerary at a Glance
| Day | Area | Main stops | Driving time (approx.) | Overnight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Trotternish loop (north) | Old Man of Storr, Lealt Falls, Kilt Rock, Staffin, Quiraing (weather permitting), Fairy Glen, Uig | 2–2.5 hours | Portree |
| 2 | West Skye and whisky | Sligachan, Fairy Pools, Talisker Distillery, Neist Point or Coral Beach | 2.5–3 hours | Portree |
| 3 | South Skye and departure | Elgol, Loch Slapin, Broadford, Torabhaig Distillery, then the Skye Bridge or the Armadale ferry | 2 hours on Skye, plus your onward journey | Home or onward |
Driving times are for dry roads with stops excluded. In winter, add 10–20%, and more if there is frost on single-track roads.
Before You Go
Base yourself in Portree
For a short winter trip, Portree is the obvious base. It is roughly central: Trotternish, Dunvegan and the Cuillin are all 15 to 45 minutes away. It also has the most restaurants open in winter, fuel nearby and the largest supermarket on the north of the island. Moving bases on a three-night trip loses you daylight you can't spare. Our where to stay section below links the hotels and areas, and our guide to where to stay on Skye in winter compares every area.
Car or tour?
A car gives you far more flexibility, and in winter you need it: you can swap Day 1 and Day 2 if the forecast for the north looks bad, or leave the Quiraing out if the road is icy. If you don't want to drive single-track roads in the dark, a guided tour is the better choice, because bus services on Skye are thin in winter. Rabbie's Skye and Eilean Donan Castle day trip from Inverness (★ 4.8, 1,800+ reviews, from $95) runs through the winter, and the Isle of Skye 3-Day Tour with Accommodation from Edinburgh (★ 4.7, 630+ reviews, from $631) is the no-car version of this plan.
Before you commit, read Driving on Skye in Winter. In short, the A87 is the trunk road and gets priority. Minor roads such as the Quiraing road (C1225) and the Glenbrittle road (C1237) are not priority gritted.
How much daylight you get in Portree
| Date | Sunrise | Sunset | Daylight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 November | 07:37 | 16:39 | about 9 hours |
| 16 November | 08:10 | 16:08 | about 8 hours |
| 1 December | 08:40 | 15:48 | about 7 hours |
| 21 December | about 09:05 | about 15:41 | about 6 hours 37 minutes |
| 1 January | 09:06 | 15:51 | about 6¾ hours |
| 1 February | 08:26 | 16:51 | about 8½ hours |
Times vary by a few minutes between calculators. Usable light also starts around 40 minutes before sunrise and lasts about 40 minutes after sunset. The earliest sunset of 2026 in Portree is around 15 December and the latest sunrise in early January, which makes the weeks either side of Christmas the tightest of the year.
Book dinner before you arrive
This is the most useful winter tip in this guide. Fewer kitchens are open, and the ones that are open fill up. Book your evening meals when you book your room. Arriving in Portree at 20:00 with nothing booked can leave you with very few choices.
What's closed
Don't plan around Dunvegan Castle (open 1 April–15 October), the Skye Museum of Island Life (Easter to mid-October) or Armadale Castle (late March to the end of October). All three are closed for the season. Boat trips from Elgol are also largely seasonal.
Other Experiences You Might Enjoy
Guided tours of the Isle of Skye run through the winter from Inverness, Edinburgh and Portree, covering the Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock, the Quiraing, the Fairy Pools and Eilean Donan Castle, with multi-day trips by way of Glencoe and Loch Ness. Browse live options below.
Day 0: Getting to Skye
From Inverness over the Skye Bridge. The drive to Portree is about 110 miles, around 2.5 to 3 hours without stops. Allow 3.5 hours or more in winter. Eilean Donan Castle sits right on the A87 at Dornie and is a natural stop: Skye day trips from Inverness stop there too. The castle's own website lists winter hours of 10:00–16:00 (last admission 15:00) from 25 October to 22 December 2026, with the castle closed on 1, 7, 8 and 15 November and 4 December. After that it is closed over Christmas and through January 2027; check the castle's opening-hours page before you go. Even when it's shut you can see it from the car park and the shore, which costs nothing. After that, Kyle of Lochalsh and the bridge to Portree take another 45 minutes to an hour.
Leave Inverness by about 11:00 if you want to see Eilean Donan and cross to Skye in daylight. If you arrive after dark, that's fine. Just don't start your first Skye drive on unfamiliar single-track roads at night.
From Mallaig on the ferry to Armadale. CalMac's winter timetable runs from 19 October 2026 to 25 March 2027. Sailings are much reduced compared with summer: on weekdays there's typically one morning and one late-afternoon crossing each way, and weekends are more limited. Book your vehicle space ahead and check the timetable for your date. From Armadale to Portree is about an hour's drive.
Day 1: The Trotternish Loop
Trotternish is the north-east peninsula, where you'll find the Storr, Kilt Rock and the Quiraing. Do it on the day with the best forecast. The Storr walk needs as much daylight as you can give it, so start early.
Hour-by-hour plan for a mid-December day (sunrise ~09:00, sunset ~15:40)
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 08:00 | Eat breakfast and leave Portree. It's still dark, so take a head torch. |
| 08:15 | Old Man of Storr car park (about 7 miles, 12–15 minutes). Pay and display: £6 for up to 6 hours, £8 for up to 12. |
| 08:20–10:15 | Walk up as the light grows. The standard there-and-back route is about 3.8 km and takes around 1 hour 15 minutes without stops. Walkhighlands' longer loop through the Sanctuary is 5 km and 1.5–2 hours. You'll reach the pinnacles at about sunrise. |
| 10:30 | Lealt Falls. A free car park and a short gravel path to the viewing platform take about 10–15 minutes. |
| 10:50 | Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls. The viewing platform is next to the car park (small parking charge). You need about 15 minutes. |
| 11:15 | Staffin: a coffee or snack stop if anything is open. Bring a packed lunch either way. |
| 11:45–13:00 | Quiraing, if conditions allow. The car park is on the single-track road between Staffin and Uig (£3 for up to 3 hours). The full circuit is 6.5 km and takes 3–4 hours, which is too long for a December day. Walk out along the path towards the Needle and the Prison instead, and turn back after 45–60 minutes. |
| 13:15 | Drive over the top to Uig. If you can't use the Quiraing road, go round the north coast on the A855. |
| 13:45–14:45 | Fairy Glen. Small parking charge. The loop is about 1.5 km and takes about an hour, but keep off Castle Ewen if the grass is wet. |
| 15:00–15:40 | Head back towards Portree, about 25 minutes on the A87. Stop at a viewpoint above Uig Bay for the last light. |
| Evening | Dinner in Portree (see evenings below). |
When to skip the Quiraing: if there is frost, snow or ice, or if the forecast warns of strong wind. The C1225 climbs steeply with hairpin bends and isn't on the priority gritting network, and the ridge path is exposed. Missing it is a sensible decision. You still get a good look at the Trotternish ridge from the A855 near Staffin.
In November or February you have up to two more hours. Start the Storr at about 07:45 in early November, allow time for the full Quiraing circuit if the ground is dry, and add Brothers' Point (Rubha nam Brathairean) near Culnacnoc on the way north.
Plan B for Day 1 (wind and rain): leave the Storr and the Quiraing for another day. Do the drive-up stops (Lealt Falls, Kilt Rock), then spend the afternoon in Portree. The Isle of Skye Candle Co. Visitor Centre on Viewfield Road has a shop, a café-pizzeria and toilets. Check its winter hours before you go.
Day 2: West Skye and Whisky
Day 2 puts the island's best indoor attraction in the middle of the day, when you most need a warm-up.
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 08:30 | Leave Portree. Sligachan is about 9 miles and 15 minutes away. |
| 08:50 | Sligachan Old Bridge at first light, with the Cuillin behind it. There's a small car park and you need 10–20 minutes. |
| 09:20 | Drive towards Glenbrittle. The Fairy Pools car park is on the right as the road drops into the glen (car £8). |
| 09:30–10:45 | Walk to the first big waterfall and back. That's about 2.4 km return and 40 minutes to 1½ hours, depending on how far upstream you go. |
| 11:00 | Talisker Distillery, Carbost, about 15 minutes away. Diageo's malts.com lists winter hours of 10:00–16:30 every day from November to February. Book your tour or tasting ahead on malts.com; our Skye distillery guide lists the options and prices. |
| 12:30 | Lunch in Carbost. The Three Chimneys at Talisker serves lunch from 12:00 to 15:00 in winter (check its closed days). The Old Inn is the other option if it's open. |
| 13:45 | Drive west towards Dunvegan and Glendale. Allow about an hour to reach Neist Point. |
| 14:50–15:50 | Neist Point at sunset. In December, don't walk down to the lighthouse: it's steep, and the climb back is in fading light. Walk the clifftop path north-west of the car park to the classic view back to the lighthouse. |
| Evening | Dinner on the way back: the Three Chimneys at Colbost (closed mid-December to mid-January), the Edinbane Inn (until 3 January), or back to Portree. |
Talisker notes. The distillery is closed on 25–26 December and 1–2 January, and it says it may close at short notice in bad weather. In 2026, annual maintenance runs from 11 October to 1 November inclusive, which affects some experiences, although the shop stays open seven days a week during that period. Talisker tours aren't sold on GetYourGuide; book them direct. For the other distilleries keeping winter hours, see our winter distilleries list.
Fairy Pools in winter: go only if the river is low and the stepping stones aren't icy or under water. The Glenbrittle road is not priority gritted. In heavy rain the crossings can be impossible, and you lose nothing by skipping them and spending longer at Talisker.
Coral Beach instead of Neist Point: from the road end at Claigan, north of Dunvegan Castle, Walkhighlands gives 4 km return and 1–2 hours. The beach faces west, so it also works at sunset. It's flatter and less exposed than Neist, which makes it the better choice on a windy day.
Plan B for Day 2: book Talisker for the late morning. Then drive to Skyeskyns at Waternish, a working tannery and showroom open seven days a week from 10:00 to 16:30. Finish with an early dinner. If the rain eases, take a quick look at the Neist clifftop.
Day 3: South Skye, Then Home
The south of the island is on the way to both the Skye Bridge and the Armadale ferry, so Day 3 gets you off Skye with the best of the light still behind you.
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 08:00 | Check out and drive Portree to Broadford (about 26 miles, 35–40 minutes). |
| 08:45 | Turn onto the B8083 at Broadford. Elgol is about 14 miles of single track, so allow 40–45 minutes. Loch Slapin and Blà Bheinn appear just as the sun comes up. |
| 09:30–10:15 | Elgol. Walk down to the shore for one of the best Cuillin views on the island, across Loch Scavaig. |
| 11:00 | Back in Broadford for coffee and fuel. |
| 11:30–13:00 | Torabhaig Distillery in Sleat, for a tour or a dram and lunch in the café. It opens five days a week in winter, and its visit page currently lists weekdays only, so book ahead and don't plan this for a weekend. |
| 13:15 | Leave Skye over the bridge. You'll see Eilean Donan in the last of the light, and most of the drive to Inverness will be in the dark. If you're taking the ferry, drive to Armadale for your booked sailing. |
Alternative Day 3: Raasay. The CalMac ferry from Sconser, near Sligachan, takes about 25 minutes. The Isle of Raasay Distillery, a short walk up from the pier, makes a good half-day. Last winter (2025/26) it opened only four days a week (closed Monday to Wednesday) in November, December, February and March, and closed completely for January. For 2026/27 the distillery says it will be closed from 18 December to 11 February; its days either side hadn't been published when we checked, so confirm before you go.
Plan B for Day 3: Elgol is poor in low cloud, because you go there for the view of the Cuillin. If the Cuillin is under cloud, go straight to Torabhaig and use the extra time for a slower lunch, or for a stop at Eilean Donan before 15:00 (when it's open).
Evenings: What to Do After 16:00
In winter, evenings are long. On a three-night trip you'll get about 16 hours of darkness each day.
- Northern Lights and stars. The long nights are the reason to come in winter. Watch the aurora alerts and have a dark spot with a north-facing view picked out in advance. See Northern Lights on the Isle of Skye.
- Pubs and music. The Old Inn at Carbost advertises live traditional music on Thursdays when it's open. Portree's hotel bars stay busy through the winter. SEALL runs concerts and events around Skye, so check its programme for your dates.
- Dinner. Antlers Bar & Grill at the Portree Hotel serves lunch and dinner every day through the winter. The Edinbane Inn serves dinner every evening (16:00–20:00) apart from Christmas Day until 3 January 2027, then closes until the end of February. The Three Chimneys at Colbost serves dinner from 17:30 but closes for its annual break from mid-December to mid-January.
Where to Stay for a 3-Day Winter Trip
- Portree, the recommended base: hotels and guesthouses within walking distance of restaurants. The Portree Hotel has Antlers Bar & Grill downstairs, open daily through the winter, or browse all stays in Portree.
- Self-catering near Portree or Carbost: good for groups, and gives you a fallback if restaurants are full. Browse stays around Carbost.
- Edinbane: the Edinbane Inn, between Portree and Dunvegan, also takes overnight guests and puts you close to the Day 2 dinner stop, but it closes from 4 January to 28 February 2027.
- Broadford: works if you're arriving late from the mainland, but it puts Trotternish 40 minutes further away each morning. Browse stays in Broadford.

Winter Tips That Make This Itinerary Work
- Fuel: fill up in Portree or Broadford before each day. Village pumps keep short hours or close in winter.
- Food: carry lunch on Day 1. Cafés across Trotternish are largely seasonal.
- Toilets: use the ones in Portree, at the distilleries and at the Candle Co. centre. Most outdoor sites have no open facilities in winter.
- Driving in the dark: expect to drive back after dark on all three days. Watch for sheep and deer on the road, and use passing places to let locals by.
- Kit: take waterproofs, warm layers, a head torch and boots with grip. For a full list, see our winter packing list.
- Pay for parking: most car parks take card, but carry some coins as a backup.
Adapting the Itinerary
Two days: do Day 1 as written. On Day 2, take Sligachan and Talisker in the morning, then leave via Broadford and stop at Eilean Donan on the way out. Leave out Neist Point and Elgol.
Four to five days: spread things out. Give the Quiraing a full circuit on a clear day, add Raasay, do the Neist Point lighthouse walk properly in November or February, and keep one day spare for bad weather. In winter, a spare day means you don't have to cut the things you came for.
No car: use a guided tour. A multi-day trip from Edinburgh or a day trip from Inverness covers the Storr, Kilt Rock and Portree without you having to drive in the dark. The Isle of Skye 3-Day Tour with Accommodation is the closest match to this plan, and our guide to Isle of Skye winter tours from Inverness and Edinburgh compares the rest.
Christmas and New Year: expect the most closures of the year. Talisker is closed on 25–26 December and 1–2 January, Eilean Donan is closed over Christmas and through January, the Three Chimneys at Colbost takes its winter break, and the Edinbane Inn closes after 3 January. Book everything early and plan for self-catering on the main holidays. Our festive Skye guide has the December dates, Christmas and Hogmanay stays and holiday transport.
Three Days on Skye Without the Driving
These 3-day tours from Edinburgh run through the winter. The first two spend both nights in Portree, close to this itinerary; the third stays in Inverness and visits Skye as a long day.
Glencoe, the Quiraing, Kilt Rock and Neist Point, with two nights in small en-suite Portree B&Bs in the price, so there's nothing else to book.
Check availability
Also two nights in Portree, at about half the starting price, because beds are only included if you select that option.
Check availability
Glencoe, Loch Ness and Trotternish with a Hairy Coo driver-guide. You book two nights in Inverness yourself, so Skye is a full day trip from there.
Check availability3 Days on Skye in Winter: FAQ
Is 3 days enough on Skye in winter?
Yes, for the main sights, provided you plan by region and accept that one stop may be lost to the weather. Three days covers the Storr, Kilt Rock, the Quiraing, the Fairy Pools, Talisker, Neist Point and Elgol. A fourth day gives you room for bad weather. Our is 3 days enough for Skye? guide covers the question year-round.
Where should I stay for 3 days on Skye?
Portree. It's central, it has the most restaurants open in winter, and every day of this itinerary starts within 45 minutes of it.
Can I do this itinerary without a car?
Not as written. Winter buses won't get you to Neist Point, Elgol or the Fairy Pools at the right times. Book a guided tour from Inverness or Edinburgh instead, such as the Isle of Skye 3-Day Tour with Accommodation.
What if it rains all three days?
Swap the order so the outdoor stops land on whichever window looks best. Then lean on the indoor options: Talisker, Torabhaig, Skyeskyns, the Candle Co. centre and Raasay if it's open. Short walks such as Kilt Rock and Lealt Falls work in almost any weather. Don't do exposed walks like the Quiraing or Neist in high winds.
Can I see the Fairy Pools in winter?
Yes, the path can be walked all year and the car park charges £8 per car. The Glenbrittle road isn't priority gritted, though, and the river crossings can be dangerous after heavy rain or in icy conditions. Decide on the day.
Is the Old Man of Storr walk safe in winter?
On a clear, dry day with good boots, yes for most walkers. The path is steep and can be icy near the top. Start in the dawn light so you're coming down in full daylight.
Should I visit in November or December?
November gives you up to two more hours of light a day, and December gives you the longest nights for stargazing. Either works. Early November is easier for walking, while December is better for the aurora.
Final Thoughts
Winter Skye rewards people who plan around the light. Pick one region each day, get to the best viewpoint early, keep a distillery in reserve for the rain and book dinner in advance. You'll see more than many summer visitors, with almost nobody else in the car parks. For the year-round version of this trip, see our 3-day Isle of Skye itineraries.
