Isle of Skye Winter Tours from Inverness and Edinburgh (2026–27)

A small-group day trip from Inverness is the best-value way to see Skye between November and March. From Edinburgh, book a 3-day tour: a same-day trip is mostly a long day on a bus, and in December much of that driving is after dark.

If you want to see Skye in winter without driving single-track roads in the dark, a tour is the sensible choice. The question is which kind. A day trip from Inverness is the best-value way to see the island between November and March. A 3-day tour from Edinburgh is the better choice if you're starting further south. A same-day trip from Edinburgh is mostly a long day on a bus, and in December much of that driving happens after dark.

Should You Take a Tour in Winter at All?

For most visitors, yes. Skye's winter roads aren't dangerous by default, but they're narrow and often wet. You'll be driving in the dark at both ends of the day, and if you're in a hire car you probably won't have winter tyres. A local driver-guide who knows which roads are passable that morning is a real help. Our guide to driving on Skye in winter covers the roads in detail.

Self-drive still wins on flexibility, though. With a car you can wait out a squall at Sligachan, chase a gap in the cloud, or stay out for a Northern Lights alert. No coach tour will do any of that.

Winter tours to the Isle of Skye leave from Inverness and Edinburgh, and most combine Portree, the Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock or the Fairy Pools with Eilean Donan Castle, Loch Ness and Glencoe on the way. Browse live options below.

Day Trips from Inverness to Skye (Winter 2026–27)

Inverness is the only city where a Skye day trip really works. Most tours leave at about 8am and get back between 7:45pm and 8pm, so allow roughly 12 hours. On the way, they follow Loch Ness to Eilean Donan Castle and cross the Skye Bridge. From there they head either north (Portree, the Old Man of Storr viewpoint, Kilt Rock) or west (Sligachan, the Fairy Pools).

What the table means in practice

  • Pick by route, not price. Tours that go north to Portree, the Storr and Kilt Rock mostly keep you near the road, which suits a dark, wet December day. Fairy Pools tours involve a rough 2.4 km walk. That's lovely on a crisp, clear day, but Highland Experience warns that winter weather may sometimes stop you getting there at all.
  • Pickup points differ. Rabbie's collects from the bus stop beside Inverness Cathedral on Ardross Street. Timberbush leaves from Railway Terrace. Others use Union Street. Book a hotel near your departure point.
  • "Small group" isn't always small. Highland Experience caps its own tours at 16 on its website, but one Viator listing for a Highland Experience Skye day trip says up to 35 travellers. Check which product you're booking.

For most people the Inverness choice is Highland Experience's Isle of Skye and Fairy Pools day trip. Timberbush's Isle of Skye and Eilean Donan day trip costs a little less and has by far the most reviews, if you just want to see Portree and Trotternish. Our day trips from Inverness guide covers the rest of the city's tours.

Multi-Day Tours from Edinburgh (and Glasgow)

From Edinburgh, Skye is about five hours by road each way. Three days is the minimum that gives you a proper day on the island. All the big operators have a 3-day option, and whether accommodation is included is the biggest price difference between them.

How to read this

  • Compare like with like. Timberbush's 3-day tour at $303 and MacBackpackers' tour from £219 don't include beds. Add two nights and the gap to a tour that includes accommodation closes quickly. Timberbush also notes that many Portree B&Bs only take cash.
  • Sleeping on Skye beats sleeping in Inverness. The Highland Experience 3-day tour is based in Inverness, so its Skye day includes about five hours of round-trip driving. Rabbie's, Timberbush and Haggis put you in Portree, so you're on the island at first light.
  • Rabbie's is our pick because the group is capped at 16, the Skye day is deliberately flexible (guides choose between the Storr, the Quiraing and others based on weather and road conditions), and Rabbie's says it never cancels a tour because too few people have booked. Book the Rabbie's 3-day Skye tour through GetYourGuide and the two nights' B&B are in the price.
  • Timberbush costs less if you're happy in a larger vehicle and want to choose your own bed. One practical note: from 1 November 2026 its departure time moves from 09:00 to 08:30.

If you'd prefer to plan your own route, our 3-day Isle of Skye winter itinerary lays out the days around the short light.

Day Trips from Edinburgh to Skye: A Reality Check

You'll occasionally see 12–13 hour "Skye from Edinburgh" day tours listed on booking sites. Think carefully before booking one in winter. With about five hours' driving each way, you get maybe two hours on the island. On the winter solstice, 21 December 2026, Portree has about 6 hours 37 minutes of daylight, and the earliest sunsets, around 3:40pm, come in mid-December. Much of what you'd see on Skye would be in fading light, and the drive home would be entirely in the dark.

We couldn't find a mainstream operator running a dedicated Edinburgh–Skye day trip this winter that we'd recommend. If you only have one day, take the train to Inverness (journeys between Edinburgh and Inverness take roughly three and a half hours) and join a day trip from there the next morning. Or book the 3-day tour.

Private and Skye-Based Tours

If you're already on Skye, or arriving by train or ferry, a local guide is the most comfortable winter option:

  • Private day tours from Portree are listed on ToursByLocals, and Viator sells a private, customisable Isle of Skye day tour with pickup anywhere on the island (from about $397 for a group of up to four, ★ 4.9 from 84 reviews). One full-day private tour for up to seven people in a Mercedes 8-seater starts at £800 for the group, and others are similar. That's expensive for two people, but reasonable for a family of five or six.
  • Macleod Heilan Tours offers 8–9 hour private days with pickup in Portree or at Kyle of Lochalsh station, which is handy if you come by train (see below).
  • Highland Experience sells a Private 3-Day Winter Retreat to the Isle of Skye from Edinburgh, including the Fairy Pools and Talisker. The price varies by season.
  • Private day tours from Inverness typically cost around US$1,000 or more per small group on Viator and Tripadvisor; check the current price. One that runs through the winter is Aye Tours' private Isle of Skye day from Inverness, from about $616 (★ 5.0, 98 reviews).

Before booking, check whether a private guide has a weather clause. At least one listed Portree private tour states that it needs good weather to run.

Train and Tour: The Scenic Way In

The Kyle Line from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh takes an average of 2 hours 40 minutes, according to ScotRail, and is one of Britain's most scenic rail journeys. In the timetable that runs to 12 December 2026, the first train leaves Inverness at 08:53 and the last train back from Kyle leaves at 17:13, with a single train each way on Sundays; check the winter times for later dates. That makes a same-day rail return with time on Skye tight, but it works well if you're staying a night: take the train to Kyle, walk or taxi over the Skye Bridge, and have a private guide pick you up at the station.

From the south, the West Highland Line to Mallaig connects with CalMac's Mallaig–Armadale ferry. The winter timetable runs from 19 October 2026 to 25 March 2027, and sailings are sparse: on weekdays there's typically one morning and one late-afternoon departure each way, with more limited weekend sailings. Check the 2026–27 times on CalMac before planning around it.

Train and tour is slower than a coach. But the views along the way are excellent even on a grey day, and once you're on Skye you avoid two long road journeys.

What to Expect on a Winter Tour

Daylight. Day tours from Inverness leave at 8am, before the sun is up in December, and get back after dark. In December and early January, Portree's sunrise comes as late as about 9:06am and its earliest sunsets, in mid-December, are around 3:40pm. Expect the first hour and the last two to three hours of the drive to be in darkness. You get noticeably more light in November and February.

Itinerary changes. Every operator we checked says the route can change with the weather. Typical changes:

  • Eilean Donan Castle's winter hours run to 22 December 2026; it is then closed over Christmas and through January 2027 (check the castle's opening-hours page), so tours stop for photos only. Rabbie's says no replacement stop is added; the time goes to other stops instead. Outside that window, the castle's official winter hours are 10am to 4pm (last admission 3pm). The castle's opening-hours page also lists single closed days on 1, 7, 8 and 15 November and 4 December 2026 and 14 February 2027, and tickets are sold on site only.
  • The Fairy Pools may be dropped in heavy rain, ice or high water.
  • The Quiraing road can be closed or partly closed by ice, and guides will switch to the Storr or Kilt Rock instead.
  • In winter, Haggis replaces its summer ferry crossing with the Skye Bridge.

Clothing. You'll be in and out of a warm bus all day, so wear layers: a waterproof shell, warm hat and gloves, and boots with grip for wet paths. Our winter packing list goes into detail.

Food stops. Lunch is usually in Portree, and meals aren't included on any of the tours above. Many cafés shorten their hours or close in winter, so take snacks. Check what's open on the Isle of Skye in winter for current openings.

Northern Lights. We didn't find a scheduled Northern Lights tour on Skye this winter. Multi-day tours that overnight in Portree give you a chance if the sky clears, but it's luck, not a promise. Our northern lights guide explains how to check forecasts.

Photographers. Coach tours aren't timed around the best light. If photography is your main reason to go, book a specialist trip. Julian Elliott's 8-day Skye & Glencoe photography tour (23–30 January 2027, departing Glasgow Airport) is timed for sunrise and sunset.

How to Choose: A Quick Checklist

  • Where are you starting? Inverness: a day trip. Edinburgh or Glasgow: three days minimum.
  • Are beds included? Add accommodation costs before comparing prices.
  • Where do you sleep? Portree or Broadford beats Inverness for actual time on Skye.
  • Group size: max 16 (Rabbie's, Highland Experience) or a bigger coach?
  • Walking: do you want the Fairy Pools walk, or would you prefer to stay near the road?
  • Dates: is Eilean Donan's interior important to you? Avoid Christmas and January, when it is closed.
  • Cancellation terms: read them before you pay (see below).

Booking Tips

  1. Book early for Christmas and New Year. Festive departures and Portree beds sell out first.
  2. Read the cancellation policy. Rabbie's lets you cancel day tours free up to 24 hours before departure. For multi-day tours, it keeps 10% if you cancel more than 21 days out and 100% after that. GetYourGuide listings for these tours usually offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
  3. Ask about minimum numbers. Rabbie's says it never cancels for low numbers. Some travellers on other operators' multi-day tours have reported cancellations for "not enough people" a few days before departure, which is a real problem if you've booked your own beds.
  4. Sort out seats early. Seats are usually first come, first served, so arrive 15 minutes early if you want to sit together or on the scenic side.
  5. Pack light. Most multi-day operators allow one bag (around 15kg) per person.
  6. Get travel insurance that covers weather disruption, especially if you're combining a tour with flights or the Kyle train.

For where to base yourself, Portree has the most open in winter; our guide to where to stay on Skye in winter compares it with Broadford, Sleat and the rest. If a distillery stop matters to you, check which distilleries keep winter hours before choosing a route: Talisker is the dependable one, and our Skye whisky and distillery guide has the details.

Winter tour questions

Isle of Skye Winter Tours: FAQ

Can you do a day trip to Skye from Inverness in winter?

Yes. Highland Experience lists its Skye tours as running all year, and Timberbush departs daily. Expect about 12 hours door to door, with a few hours on the island and a good part of the drive after dark in December.

Is a day trip from Edinburgh to Skye worth it?

Not in winter. It's about five hours' drive each way, and in December there's under seven hours of daylight. A 3-day tour, or a night in Inverness plus a day trip, is a far better use of your time.

How many days do you need for Skye on a tour?

From Inverness, one day gives you a taste and two days let you see it properly. From Edinburgh, three days is the minimum, and four or five days lets you add Glencoe and a more relaxed Skye day.

Do Skye tours run in December?

Yes. Day trips from Inverness and winter versions of the 3-day tours run through December. Check Christmas Day and New Year schedules with each operator, and see our Isle of Skye in December guide for festive transport.

Do tours go to the Fairy Pools in winter?

Some do. Highland Experience's Fairy Pools tour runs all year, but the operator warns that winter weather may sometimes prevent access, so your guide may swap it for something else on the day.

Are Skye tours cancelled for weather?

Rarely. Most operators reroute instead. Rabbie's says it will only cancel for safety reasons and gives a full refund if it does.

Is Eilean Donan Castle open on winter tours?

It's open with shorter winter hours (10am to 4pm, last admission 3pm), then closed over Christmas and through January 2027; check the castle's opening-hours page. Tours stop for photos while it's closed.

Our Verdict

For most people, the best Skye winter tour is a small-group day trip from Inverness, and Highland Experience's Isle of Skye and Fairy Pools day trip is our pick. From Edinburgh, book Rabbie's 3-day Isle of Skye tour for the small group and flexible Skye day, or Timberbush's 3-day tour if price matters and you'll sort your own bed. Avoid same-day trips from Edinburgh, assume the Fairy Pools and Eilean Donan's interior aren't guaranteed, and book early if you're travelling over Christmas or New Year.
